Qube's big day out

Posted in Uncategorized on February 27th, 2009 by graemebenstead

We had a grand day out yesterday at the Wired Sussex Jobs and Skills fair. The yearly event held at the Brighton Corn Exchange is a great opportunity for people looking to work in digital industries, and for companies to find new people to work with.

The Qube stand was a huge success , even if we did get a tiny bit envious early on about the fact that everyone else had branded pens.

We got to chat to some very interesting people, including a very talented illustrator and some nice folk from the University of Brighton as well as a whole bunch of people who were very excited about the new opportunities.

It was also the awards ceremony for the Wired Sussex Internship programme, so our former interns Glenn and Tom went up to collect their certificates and get their photos taken. We’re ever so proud of them.

Qube-ws

The photos are all up on the Brighton Jobs Fair website, and there are some lovely ones of Nigel giving his speech at the awards ceremony so go and check them out.

A big thankyou to everyone at Wired Sussex who helped make the event such a success, and we look forward to taking part again next year.

Excuse the silly name, but every Friday we gather up all our favourite tweets from the last week and post them for all to see. Why do we do this? Not really sure, hopefully it gives you a little bit of insight into the weird and wonderful mind of a Qubite.

So without further adieu here are the Qubites and their tweets of the week.

Anti-Social Media

Posted in Uncategorized on February 25th, 2009 by tomplaner

Some companies, such as Nike and Innocent Smoothies, just get social media and know how to use it properly. Ryanair is, unfortunately, not one of these companies.

Here we have a lovely example not only of how to use social media to your disadvantage, but how to fail at PR and shoot yourself in the foot with regards to crisis management as well. Good work Ryanair, perhaps it might be time to develop a new online strategy?

5 of the best and 5 of the rest

Every Wednesday we post ‘5 of the best’ social media stories we have seen and ‘5 of the rest’ (Other stories we love for various reasons).

5 of the best

Whose data is it anyway?
Last week’s Facebook ULA flip-flop is still rumbling on in people’s heads and the BBC asks “Whose data is it anyway?”. Well Facebook say it is still ours.

Everyone loves Google, Until its too big
Google has dominated search for a little while now and has permanently made its mark on the internet, but is its size making it into an anti-competitive monopoly? Let’s hope some of the exciting social media driven search sites can survive and thrive.

MPs ‘talking, not hearing online’
Obama became the first Internet president with all his social media work last year, but how are our MPs back in the UK dealing with the social web? The BBC say they are showing the classic problem of using social media for push marketing and not actually listening to their audience.

How to deal: with social media conflict
An interesting look at how we should deal with conflict in our social networks

Nofollow is Dying: The Impact of Micro-Blogging and Nofollow on SEO
Not strictly social media I know but it is still got me thinking. Is nofollow being killed by microblogging? Certainly a thought provoking theory.

5 of the rest

The smallest advergame ever
A really cool internet promotion that has a unique approach on the traditional favicon

Screenclean
A simple and easy way to clean your screen without lifting a finger. Disclaimer: Qube is unaware of any animals being hurt in the production of this site and Luka is just down right confused by it all.

Ledge man sparks six-hour police stand-off in Hove
We always like to stay abreast of the local goings on in our seaside city and this story just happened to catch our eye.

PSFK
A new website from the American government that helps teach children not to be so susceptible to advertising. The same American government that through a combination of online, viral, print, tv and below the line PR campaigns convinced an entire nation to vote for one Mr B.H.Obama? Err, yes.

The 25 most valuable blogs are…
If you own one of these blogs you might be sitting on a pretty penny. Personally I’d love to own a blog called “Neatorama”

We have been graded and compared in real time, our meme’s tracked and foul language judged. we have been geotagged and mashed-up all over. But now we can find out what people really think about us with a rather fun twitter sentiment analysis tool named twitrratr.com.

There isn’t really anything clever going on in the background, just some cross referencing of your search term with some pre-determined positive and negative terms.

Results when searching for individual users tend to be be determined by the postitivity or negativity of that person but searching for larger brands or personalities ‘coke zero‘ or ‘obama‘ can return some interesting results, even if they often seem to be very bias towards the favourable side of things… still its good to be positive!

How not to market on Twitter
Great example of bad marketing practice on Twitter but how quick and honest communication can get people back on your side.

Facebook the new AOL

An interesting view point on Facebook and a good reminder on where we have come from online.

Guardian group turns to Google Apps
Our office loves google docs and it is interesting to see big media business taking it up as well. Great for collaborating and sharing work.

Twitter is better than Facebook for business
A survey and some interesting analyses on the social networks we use for marketing and communication.

Facebook ‘withdraws’ data changes
Facebook quickly withdraws its new terms of service after internet uproar. The web moves quickly.

5 of the rest

Elton Johns Alien period drama
‘Pride and Predator’, we are not making this up! Is it April 1st already?

Pirate Bay court courtcase
It has been rumbling on all week. A pretty land mark case for many reasons, we are all interested to see how it pans out.

Toy Story Lego!
Combining 2 child hood favourites (My child hood anyway I am 21)

Im in like with you
If you read the survey earlier you will see this was rated as social network most likely to die. Odd name aside this site is really well built and packed with great features. Now if I can just convince everyone else that I am on the site for research purposes…

Mobile Industry Embraces Universal Phone Charger
Some of the biggest names in mobile technology are combining to create a Universal Phone charger. Good for the environment, good for when your phone runs out of battery at a friends house. Oh yeah, and apple aren’t interested. Suprised?

Searchwiki_adwords

Users logged into Google are beginning to see a remove box above their ads giving them the power to remove adverts they do not like. What Google is doing with this is uncertain at the moment. This may feed it back into the analytics to lets advertisers know how many people are removing their ad or it could be used to help Google calculate its quality score. What happens if an advertiser responds to the feedback and changes the ad, will it re-appear to users who had previously removed it?

I’m not so sure advertisers will be happy with their paid ads disappearing off of peoples search results. While Google still maintain customising your search results is still a private thing and has no bearings on global search results it seems inevitable that eventually will.

This is a great example of how social media is being used to help forge positive social change for Indian women.
